My Favourite Piano Pieces To Play

Without a doubt my favourite passtime is the piano. Having had keyboard lessons for half my life, after reaching Grade 6 practical and Grade 3 theory (I could have gone higher but I liked having all ther certificates instead of skipping grades) I started teaching myself piano. It alway calms me when I’m feeling stressed, and cheers me up when I’m feeling down. So here is a short list of the pieces I most love to play, with links to sheet music and tutorials so you can learn to play, and enjoy, them too.

Yiruma – River Flows In You

This piano song is beautiful in its apparent simplicity, yet contains many changes in tempo and volume as well as trills making it easy to adapt to your own style. Whilst playing it at school during form time I noticed almost everyone had become silent, and one of my friend’s commented that it gave her shivers listening to it.

Carter Burwell – Bella’s Lullaby

This is the piece of music that was composed for the film twilight, and made for the scene where Edward plays Bella a piano piece he was inspired to compose because of her. Although it is not as elegant as River Flows In You, its simple chords for the left hand make it an ideal piece for beginners.

Leonard Cohen – Hallelujah

A classic song that lets you express your passionate and emotional side through music. It was made famous once again recently by Rufus Wainwright – it was one of the most popular songs from the Shrek movie franchise.

Sarah MacLachlan – When She Loved Me

A rather depressing song made popular in Toy Story 2, when Jessie is thinking about her relationship with her previous owner. I found it sounds best when you play rising and falling arpegios in the left hand based on the guitar chords that would be played, so in the end it sounds a bit similar to Hallelujah.
